RIOT LA FEST FOUNDER ABBEY LONDER (1/18/17)



Comedian/producer Abbey Londer started the Riot LA comedy fest in 2012, seeking to bring Los Angeles a world-class comedy fest to a city that had surprisingly never had one of its own. In four short years, its excellent word-of-mouth has turned it into a phenomenon that this year plays host to the legendary Mel Brooks as he does a Q&A with a screening of "Blazing Saddles" at the Microsoft Theater, and has six sold-out shows by comedian Ali Wong at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel. Londer took some time to discuss the fest and its impressive history with "Kozversations."

Kenny Loggins is THE movie Soundtrack King of the '80s and '90s, thanks to such hits as "Footloose," "Danger Zone," and many more. He's now reinvented "Footloose" as a children's book with new lyrics, and he's on a national bookstore tour to promote it. In this Kozversation, he talks about his career, the new song and the creative process behind working for movies, for adults and for kids. "The Princess Bride" - Cary Elwes - 10/07/16

Cary Elwes was the heartthrob hero of "The Princess Bride," one of those little-movies-that-could that was a minor hit in 1987 but has grown to become a timeless classic. In his book "As You Wish," he shares a lot of great inside stories from the making of that movie. I In this "Kozversation," Elwes speaks about his inspiration for writing the book, how he recaptured all those memories, and tells an unbelievably funny story about Andre the Giant. There's also memories of Billy Crystal and Wallace Shawn before he suddenly says he has to run for a plane and just completely bails. Hey, I'll own it. It was incredibly rude, but what's here is still interesting. Tune in!

Once in a while, an interview comes along that's just magic and fascinating and fun, and this was one of them. Jeff Feuerzeig has made some incredible docs over the years, including profiles of mentally troubled musician/artist Daniel Johnston, Jeff Dowd who's the real-life "Dude" of "The Big Lebowski," Chuck Wepner the real-life inspiration for Rocky Balboa, and now the infamous literary hoax known as JT LeRoy, subject of Jeff's brilliant new doc "Author: The JT LeRoy Story." You gotta hear him explain the story behind the story of the biggest literary hoax of the last 20 years. 30 years even, maybe. It's an amazing story with a fantastic tale about the real-life dude behind "The Dude", Jeff Dowd. Tune in. I'm real proud of this one.

BARRY MCGUIRE, SINGER OF THE CLASSIC "EVE OF DESTRUCTION": KOZVERSATIONS (08/19/16)

Barry McGuire hit the top of the charts in 1965 with a song called "Eve of Destruction," whose stark lyrics by the brilliant singer-songwriter P.F. Sloan mourned the war and environmental destruction going on around the planet even then. The story of how it was recorded, how it hit the airwaves, the backlash against the song by politicians and DJs, and how Barry never managed to hit the charts again yet has maintained 50 years of touring off that one song is one of the most fascinating Kozversations ever. If you love a good story, a good song, and/or rock n roll history this one is for you!

Radio Titans head Carl Kozlowski has met lots of cool people throughout his seven years in podcasting, but his all time favorite has to be his all-time favorite singer-songwriter Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum. Ever since Koz heard the band's breakthrough album "Grave Dancer's Union" for the first time in 1992, he was blown away by the band on every level: lyrics, music, and the at least 25 live concerts he's seen with them. Thanks to their ace PR person Dana, he's been able to interview Dave three times by phone and have a fun little video made for the Titans homepage (www.radiotitans.com - check out the bottom of it) but on July 21, he was able to meet Dave for a real sit-down interview for the first time ever. AWESOME RISING ROCK BAND 3 BY DESIGN: KOZVERSATIONS (07/21/16)

3 By Design is a fast rising rock band on the LA scene, with two hard-hitting EPs including their latest, "Enemy," already out even though they just formed two years ago. Their guitarist, Kevin Hicklin, and bassist Frank Mullis, dropped by Radio Titans studios for a free-wheeling conversation on the band, but also on what it's like for Kevin being an African-American in hard rock, the powerful influence Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch had on Kevin's spirituality and Frank's love of Michael McDonald and Hall and Oates. (Yes, you read right!) Plus we include a couple of their slammin' tunes, for a well-rounded visit that was a blast!

Roseanne

Roseanne has been one of America's most outspoken and unique voices for the past 30 years, particularly on her groundbreaking sitcom "Roseanne." But in 2012, she took her outspoken opinions to another level by running for President. Thank God she filmed that wild ride, in which she started representing her own Green Tea Party, and then went for the nomination of the Green Party, stirring up a whole can of worms that shows even indie parties are screwed up these days. She wound up being the presidential candidate for the Peace and Freedom Party and wound up 6th nationwide! In this interview, she talks about what she learned, what fires her up, what she hopes to do next (she might still be a Veep candidate come August!) and makes it clear that she's the one who broke the glass ceiling first as a woman national presidential nominee. Hold on to your hats!

Comedy today wouldn't be the same without Madeleine Smithberg, who with Lizz Winstead teamed up to create "The Daily Show" for Comedy Central back in 1996. Brian Unger is a comedy legend, as a star "Correspondent" for the first three years of "The Daily Show," under Craig Kilborn. He helped redefine comedy as we know it, particularly in the political realm, and he explained it all to Koz on this special episode a week before he heads to Politicon (www.politicon.com) for an epic "Daily Show" reunion. Episode 90: JOHN RATZENBERGER (CLIFF THE MAILMAN FROM "CHEERS"!) (06/17/16)

John Ratzenberger played one of America's most beloved sitcom characters, Cliff the Mailman, on "Cheers" for 11 years. Since then, he has become one of the most-used voices in Pixar movies, with a role in the latest, "Finding Dory." But he's also a longtime Republican activist who will be appearing in four panels at Politicon (www.politicon.com) June 25-26 in Pasadena, CA. A six-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner, he is known for his starring roles as Captain Hawkeye Pierce in the TV series M*A*S*H and Arnold Vinick in The West Wing, and his supporting role in the 2004 film The Aviator as U.S. Senator Owen Brewster, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. For 14 years, he served as the host of Scientific American Frontiers, a television show that explored cutting-edge advances in science and technology. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Stony Brook University and a founder and member of the advisory board of the university's Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and the Future of Life Institute. He serves on the board of the World Science Festival and is a judge for Math-O-Vision. Alda is giving a free and rare lecture at Caltech's Beckman Auditorium on April 6, and he phoned in to talk about his lifelong passion for science, what made "MASH" work so timelessly and much more. Koz couldn't ask for a better guest to celebrate this landmark 75th episode than British singing superstar Rumer, who has made quite a splash on the British music scene since her debut album "Seasons of My Soul" in 2010. She won MOJO Magazine's Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award, as well as two Brit Awards (the equivalent of our Grammys), and went platinum in England while selling more than a million albums across Europe. She's had a string of successful CDs since, often covering classics and personal favorites from the '60s and '70s and is currently working on her debut American album, a collection of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's finest songs. Yet there's been a real up and down to it all, as her unexpected fame also brought her battles with PTSD and depression. Episode 60: Kevin Allison

Kevin Allison was a member of The State – a comedy troupe that helped redefine comedy in the 1990s, alongside the likes of “Mr. Show” and “The Ben Stiller Show.” They had 11 members, many of whom continue to power American comedy through the creation of “Reno 911,” “Viva Variety!”, the “Night at the Museum” films, and cult hits like “Wet Hot American Summer.” But Allison had his own unique niche in the troupe, as he came out as gay right from the beginning of their shot at success, in 1994 – more than two decades before marriage equality was achieved. Allison invited Koz over to his New York City apartment while Koz was in the Big Apple on other Radio Titans business, and this terrific Kozversation is the result.

Episode 39: Clark Duke

A member of the cast of the greatest American sitcom ever made (in Koz’s opinion), “The Office,” as well as a member of the “Hot Tub Time Machine” team, co-star of the hit Web series with Michael Cera called “Clark and Michael” and now a cast member of one of Robin Williams’ last movies, “A Merry Friggin’ Christmas,” Clark Duke is riding one lucky wave to stardom. An Oscar-winning actress for “Prizzi’s Honor” with two other nominations to boot, Huston has done a string of iconic roles over the years, from Morticia Addams to Etheline Tenenbaum. She’s also directed three acclaimed films, been a world-class model and loved at least two iconic men: Jack Nicholson and sculptor Robert Graham. Now she’s written the second of two acclaimed memoirs, “Watch Me,” and she talks about the decision to open her life up to the world, about the magic Nicholson and Graham each held for her, what it was like growing up as the daughter of legendary director John Huston, the key to cracking a character, and much more!

Episode 36: Eddie Money

One of the most enduring and beloved rock stars of the last 40 years, Eddie Money has sold 28 million records worldwide and still tours constantly today. In this episode, he tells Koz how he learned his dad’s advice to “never let an Indian punch you in the face” turned out to be true, how he once went into a catatonic state and screwed up his left leg from using barbiturates with alcohol, the secrets to writing a hit song, and why he was a vampire in that video from the early ’80s. You gotta hear this, folks.



Episode 34: Wendy Liebman

Koz’s favorite female comic is also one he’s known since 1996 – when he made his professional club debut at the Chicago Improv opening up for her. She’s like a female Seinfeld – clean, smart, classy, yet an undeniable master of the funny. This summer she took her career to new heights by competing on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” a decision she made after surviving a harrowing DUI car crash (the other driver was the drunk!) Hear all about her incredible journey and all sorts of funny stuff on this interview, it’s a great one!



Episode 33: Dr. Peter McGraw

Most professors spend their days giving lectures or doing research into quantum physics. Peter McGraw is not your typical professor. As the head of the Humor Research Lab (aka HURL) at the University of Colorado-Boulder, he not only has traveled the globe finding out why different cultures find things funny, he’s lived to write a book about it, called ‘The Humor Code.” He tells Koz all about the secrets behind what makes things funny in this interview.



Episode 32: Robert Beltran

A veteran Latino character actor, Beltran even played a Commander on “Star Trek Voyager.” But his true love is theater and he’s now directing a nearly all-Latino production of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” He talks about it here.



Episode 31: P.F. Sloan

If you thought the story of lost and found rock legend Rodriguez in the Oscar-winning doc “Searching for Sugarman” was amazing, wait til you get a load of the story P.F. Sloan tells in this interview. One of the ’60s top songwriters with tunes from “Eve of Destruction” to “Secret Agent Man” and a founder of The Grass Roots, Sloan wanted a taste of fame making his own records, andthat’s where he ran afoul of the Mob. He was forced to sign a promise not to record or sell new songs or receive royalties for his songs for 40 years under the risk that his family would be killed. Thus began a four-decade disappearance that only recently ended, and he’s back with a stunning tell-all autobiography and new CD, “My Beethoven.” Prepare to be amazed.



Episode 30: Brian Finkelstein

As the host of one of the LA Moths – America’s top storytelling show – Brian Finkelstein has taken his highly awkward set of life circumstances and made them into highly funny stories. He sat down for a Kozversation while promoting his new solo storytelling show “First Day Off in a Long Time,” which will run Oct. 1, 8, 15, and 22 at the Steve Allen Theater in Los Angeles before a planned off-Broadway run in 2015.
